Flashcards
What are diamagnetic and paramagnetic substances, and what causes their magnetic properties?
Diamagnetic substances are repelled by an external magnetic field due to the absence of unpaired electrons. Paramagnetic substances are weakly attracted by an external magnetic field due to the presence of unpaired electrons. An example of a paramagnetic substance is Oxygen (O₂).
Explain the characteristics of ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and ferrimagnetic substances.
Ferromagnetic substances are strongly attracted by an external magnetic field, with magnetic domains aligned in the same direction. Antiferromagnetic substances have magnetic domains aligned in opposite directions in equal numbers, resulting in a net zero magnetic moment. Ferrimagnetic substances have magnetic domains aligned in opposite directions but in unequal numbers, leading to a net magnetic moment weaker than ferromagnetism.
